How to connect your computer to the Internet at IU

On this page:

On-campus connections

Ethernet in campus housing (IUB and IUPUI)

To connect to the Internet via Ethernet in campus housing, you will need a Network ID. Your computer must have an Ethernet card (also called a network interface card, or NIC), and you must have an Ethernet cable. The Get Connected utility will help you configure your Windows computer for connecting to the IU network. For help, see Get Connected to IU's network from campus housing and Ethernet in campus housing

Ethernet in campus offices

To set up a computer in your office on campus, contact your department's local support provider (LSP). The data jack needs to be activated and an IP address assigned. If you aren't sure who your department's LSP is, contact your campus Support Center.

Wireless on campus

If your computer has a wireless network card, you can make a wireless connection to the IU network at many locations on the IU campuses. At IUB, IUPUI, and IU East, the IU Secure wireless network provides secure access without the use of VPN; see About IU Secure. At other campuses, a VPN connection is required to use the wireless network.

Note: Beginning January 1, 2010, UITS will require MAC address registration to connect to the IU Secure network. This applies to new devices only; any device that has connected to IU Secure during fall semester 2009 will be grandfathered into the DHCP database and will not need to register. For more information on MAC address registration, see Registering your computer on the IU network

The IU Secure wireless network is available in all IU Bloomington and IUPUI residence halls (with the exception of Wright), along with the Campus View Apartments. If IU Secure is not yet available in your campus residence, you may operate a properly configured wireless access point (WAP) as an exception to the IT-19 Extending the University Data Network and IT-20 Wireless Networking policies from the University Information Policy Office (UIPO). Once IU Secure is available in your residence, this exception will no longer apply and you will need to remove your WAP from the network. For details, see Wireless access points in residence halls without IU wireless networks

Off-campus connections

Note: Indiana University and Purdue University allow researchers and visitors wireless access to their own networks from each campus. For details, see Wireless access at Indiana University and Purdue University.

DSL, cable modem, or dial-up connections (outside ISPs)

For information about special rates for Indiana University students, faculty, and staff, see High-speed Internet service

For help setting up DSL, cable modem, or dial-up modem service, contact an Internet service provider (ISP) in your area; see Finding an Internet service provider. Your ISP will give you instructions to configure your computer.

Dial-up connections (IUB and IUPUI)

For information about making a dial-up connection at IUB or IUPUI, and links to instructions for configuring your computer, see The IUB and IUPUI modem pools.
