Securing passcodes

The Caller ID telephones in use at Indiana University are equipped with a security number feature that masks passcodes with the * (asterisk) symbol. This feature keeps passcodes private when you dial certain numbers that you have set up through the Set Options menu. For example, if you have 69800 (the number to access voice mail at IUB) set up as a security number, then the numbers you enter after it (i.e., your voice mail passcode) will always be replaced with * symbols and won't be stored in your phone. You can secure up to five 12-digit numbers on your single-line telephone and up to five 24-digit numbers on your two-line telephone. For more specific information, see the appropriate section below:

Single-line telephones

To enter a security number

  1. Press the Set Options key.

  2. Press the arrow up/down key to scroll to number 9, or press 0 and 9 to go directly to the item.

  3. Press the * key, then enter the security telephone number (e.g., 69800), and press Save. Repeat this step for each security number you want to enter.

  4. When you are finished, press RLS.

To delete or edit a security number

  1. Press the Set Options key.

  2. Press the arrow up/down key to scroll to number 9, or press 0 and 9 to go directly to the item.

  3. Press the * key, and then press Save until you find the number you want to change or delete.

  4. Press the left arrow key to delete the security number. Once you have deleted the number, you can use the dial pad to enter a new or modified number.

  5. Press Save, and then RLS.

Two-line telephones (IUB only)

To enter a security number on your two-line telephone

  1. Press the Set Options key.

  2. Press # (pound sign) to enter the setup list, and then press the arrow up/down key to scroll to number 8, or press 8 to go directly to the item.

  3. Using the dial pad, enter the security number, and then press Save. Repeat these steps for each security number you want to enter.

  4. When you are finished, press RLS.

To delete or edit a security number on a two-line telephone

  1. Press the Set Options key.

  2. Press # (pound sign) to enter the setup list, and then press the arrow up/down key to scroll to number 8, or press 8 to go directly to the item.

  3. Press Save until you find the number you want to change or delete.

  4. Press the left arrow key to delete the security number. Once you have deleted the number, you can use the dial pad to enter a new or modified number.

  5. Press Save, and then RLS.
