Getting your initial IU student accounts
If you are a student who has been admitted to the university and to the appropriate school within the university, you can create your first Indiana University computing accounts by using the Account Management Service (AMS). You will need to use your last name, your birth date, and your full 10-digit University ID number (UID) to log into the service.
Your initial student accounts will usually include a Network ID account, which allows you to create and manage other technology accounts as well as log into certain university services; an ADS domain account, which allows you to authenticate to university resources; and an email account on either Imail or Umail. If you are a student at IU Bloomington, you will also receive a UITS printer account, which allows you to use on-campus printing facilities.
To create your initial IU student accounts:
Note: You will need to know your 10-digit University ID number to create your initial accounts.
- Go to the Account Management Service at: https://itaccounts.iu.edu/
- Click
Create my first IU computing accounts.
- Enter your last name, date of birth, and University ID number in
the fields provided. If a security code is provided, enter it in
the last field. Click
Continue.
- The AMS will display the Guidelines for Appropriate Usage, which
are rules and policies for IT account use at IU. After you have
read the Guidelines, enter
Yesto agree to these policies, and then clickContinue.
- If you have multiple roles at IU (e.g., if you are both a
student and a staff member), you will have to select one role to be
your primary affiliation at IU. Select the role you want, and then
click

your IU email. Faculty and staff should usually choose

Center walk-in location in person.

To create additional IU student accounts:
- Go to the Account Management Service at: https://itaccounts.iu.edu/
- Select
Manage my IU computing accounts.Note: Only full-time faculty or staff members can request group and departmental accounts.

Changing your IU student account passphrase
Changing your passphrase periodically is a good way to help keep your technology accounts secure. Moreover, synchronizing your passphrase (i.e., "changing" your passphrase to the same value) through the Passphrase Maintenance utility often helps resolve issues logging into some IU services.
To change or synchronize your IU student passphrase:
- Close all applications other than your Internet browser.
In your browser, if you are using the Account Management Service, in the left column, click
https://passphrase.iu.edu/change current passphrase. Otherwise, go to the Passphrase Maintenance page at: - In the first field, enter your Network ID username; if you want to change
the passphrase to a group or departmental account, enter the username of that
account instead.
- In the next field, enter the Network ID passphrase.
- In the last two fields, enter the passphrase you want the account
to have. All accounts associated with the Network ID will be set to
this new passphrase.
You can use the Passphrase Maintenance page either to change all your passphrases at once or to synchronize all accounts under your Network ID to the same passphrase. For information on selecting a valid and secure passphrase, see Passwords and passphrases.
- Click
Change Passphrase.
Resetting your IU student account passphrase
If you have forgotten your passphrase, you can have it reset and thereby get continued access to your IU technology accounts. Students have the following options to have their passphrases reset:
-
Online: If you have enrolled in the passphrase
self-service reset system, you can reset your forgotten passphrase by

Start, you will have a limited amount of time to successfully complete the process. If you do not complete it in that time, you will be locked out and unable to resume the Self-Service reset process. If you are locked out, contact your campus Support Center for assistance. - Enter your last name, date of birth, and University ID number in
the fields provided. Enter the code provided in the last field.
Click
