At IU, how do I change my Network ID passphrase?
Changing your passphrase regularly is one of the best ways to preserve the security and integrity of your computing accounts. If you know your Network ID passphrase, you can change your passphrase on all of your Indiana University accounts. If you have forgotten your passphrase, you cannot change it, but instead will have to reset it. See At IU, how do I reset my Network ID passphrase?
Note: To avoid problems, log out of any services you are using before changing your passphrase, and then log in again with your new passphrase. This includes computer workstations, email clients (e.g., Outlook), mobile devices, IU authenticated web pages (e.g., Oncourse and OneStart), OCS or VOIP phones, and network shares; see What precautions should I take when changing my passphrase? If a service attempts to log you in with your old passphrase information, you may be locked out of your account; see At IU, why is my ADS domain account locked?
To change your Network ID passphrase, or the passphrase for a group account you own:
- Close all applications other than your Internet browser, and log out
of any phones that function as clients for UniCom.
In your browser, if you're using the Account Management Service, in the left column, click
https://passphrase.iu.edu/change current passphrase. Otherwise, go to the Passphrase Maintenance page at: - In the first field, enter your Network ID username; if you want to change
the passphrase to a group or departmental account, enter the username of that
account instead.
- In the next field, enter the Network ID passphrase.
- In the last two fields, enter the passphrase you want the account
to have. All accounts associated with the Network ID will be set to
this new passphrase.
For information on selecting a valid and secure passphrase, see Passwords and passphrases.
- Click
Change Passphrase.
Note: When you change your Network ID passphrase, it may take up to 20 minutes for all systems to recognize the new passphrase. UITS recommends waiting 20 minutes before logging into IU systems, such as IU Webmail, Account Management Service, and OneStart.
Information regarding group accounts
Every group, department, or student organization account has an official "owner" or sponsor, usually a faculty member. This account owner is the only person authorized to change the group account passphrase, even if there are other people who regularly log into and use the account.
If you are not the account owner and you would like to change the
passphrase on an IU Bloomington group account, you must obtain
permission in writing from the account owner. This can be either a
letter on official IU letterhead, delivered in person to a UITS
Support Center walk-in office, or an email message to
valid@indiana.edu originating from the
account owner's personal email account. The letter must contain the
username of the account (for example,
jediclub). It must explicitly grant you
permission to change the passphrase, and it must contain the account
owner's University ID number. If the account owner elects
to send an email message to the Accounts Office, the message must
specify whether you will handle the change request by mail or by
visiting the Support Center walk-in office. If you wish to change the
passphrase by mail, the account owner will need to include your postal
address.
If you are not the account owner and you would like to change the passphrase on an IUPUI group account, the department chairperson must contact the Support Center to request a change in ownership.
