ARCHIVED: Project: IU BCPT (Business Continuity Planning Tool)

Primary UITS contact: Marge Abels

Last update: February 9, 2010

Description: The IU BCPT is a comprehensive business continuity planning tool originally developed by University of California, Berkeley. Originally developed to manage and maintain their own continuity plans, UC Berkeley allowed access to other institutions of higher education via an open source structure. After customizing the tool to fit our needs, UITS began hosting the planning tool in July 2008 as an enterprise application for all IU campuses and departments to develop campus and departmental business continuity plans.

Outcome: A web-based application through which emergency planners at university and campus levels can import and maintain information (e.g., staff rosters, equipment inventories, call trees, procedures, checklists) in support of emergency management, business continuity/impact analysis, and disaster recovery planning

Future strategy: Kuali-Ready

UC-Berkeley has started the process of moving the business continuity planning tool to the Kuali (open source) Foundation, allowing the tool to be more widely available to universities and colleges in the US and Canada. The software, now called "Kuali-Ready", will be delivered in a "software-as-a-service" model, in which the application will be hosted at certain locations (UC-Berkeley and here at IU for US campuses, and at the University of Toronto and University of British Columbia for Canadian campuses). In that model, universities and colleges will subscribe and use the software remotely, instead of having to install it and maintain it locally.

Indiana University is a founding member of the Kuali-Ready project, has a voting Board member, and a representative on the functional steering group. In this way, IU will have direct influence on the application's functionality.

Milestones and status:

  • December 2007: Identify funding sources and support resources within UITS and other university sources.
  • December 2007: Funding received from the University Budget Office.
  • January-February 2008: Install software from UC Berkeley; customize for IU
  • March 2008: Organize pilot project for further customization requirements for IU.
